Biography

James Edward Moody was born on 28 November 1862, in West End, Hampshire, the eldest child of James and Ann Moody.[1] On the 1871 census he was living in West End with his parents and two surviving siblings, and described as a scholar;[2] the only change in 1881 is that he was working as a farm labourer, like his father.[3]

Some time later he joined the army,[4] serving as a private in the Hampshire Regiment, and was stationed in Burma in 1889 where there was continued insurrection in the aftermath of the Third Anglo-Burmese War of 1885. For this he was awarded the India General Service Medal with "Burma 1887–89" clasp.[5] A decade later he fought in the Second Boer War (1899–1902) where he was awarded the Queen's South Africa Medal with clasps denoting service in the states of Cape Colony and Transvaal, and at the Battle of Paardeberg (18–27 February 1900).[6] The Hampshire Regiment remained in South Africa after the war, entitling James to the King's South Africa Medal. He was discharged on 5 November 1902 at Portsmouth.[7]

James married Mary Hatto on 15 November 1902, at St James's church, West End.[8] No longer a soldier, James took a job as the local postman and they lived in "a little cottage in the High Street," West End, where their oldest son Leslie was born. Shortly after they moved to 6 Park Villas, Upper New Road,[9] where their four younger children were born,[4] and where they can be found on 1911 census.[10] James died suddenly at home on 1 April 1921 from pneumonia, aged 58; Mary died on 12 February 1952, aged 84.[4]
